Lizard Butte

Lizard Butte is the volcanic landmark across the Snake River from Marsing. A short climb offers views over the river, orchards, surrounding wine country, and the Owyhee Mountains. The city highlights it as a local hiking destination.

A short climb with uneven footing

Short does not mean flat: the hillside can be steep and exposed. Wear shoes with grip, bring water, and allow children to set a comfortable pace for both the ascent and descent. Stay on established access routes and respect private-property signs and boundaries.

For a visit outside an organized event, confirm current access and parking arrangements before making a special trip. The sunrise association’s event instructions do not establish daily gate hours or year-round facilities.

Easter sunrise visits

The Lizard Butte Easter Sunrise Association holds an annual Christian service here. Its FAQ estimates roughly 10–15 minutes to walk from general event parking, depending on pace; allow additional time to park and settle in. Warm layers, suitable hiking footwear, and a blanket are useful for the early start.

Event rides and closer parking can be requested, but the organizer still describes stairs and uneven ground near the service area. Ask about your specific access needs. Portable restrooms and other event arrangements should not be assumed available on an ordinary hiking day.
