St. Gertrude welcomes visitors to its chapel, Welcome Center and museum. For children interested in how people lived, the museum gives the outing a clear focus; the monastery offers the setting and context around it. This is a working religious community, so follow posted visitor guidance and approach the chapel as a quiet space.

The organization publishes Welcome Center and museum hours of 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, in Pacific Time. That time-zone detail matters if you are driving from southern Idaho. Confirm the current schedule before traveling and check museum admission separately from access to other visitor areas.

Make Pine Bar a deliberate river trip

Pine Bar Recreation Site is approximately 11 miles south of Cottonwood via Graves Creek Road, according to the BLM. It provides a Lower Salmon River access point for floating, fishing, picnicking and camping. Use the recreation site’s directions or coordinates; the Cottonwood Field Office address shown on the BLM page is an office, not the river access.

A picnic beside the river requires less preparation than a float or overnight stay. River conditions, transport arrangements and suitable safety equipment need separate attention for a boating trip. Camping is restricted to designated numbered sites and has an overnight fee. Check current BLM advisories before setting out; older road-work notices should not be mistaken for a current closure.
