Lewiston’s river setting supports a short playground-and-path outing, a history visit at Hells Gate, or a longer drive along the Clearwater. Start with how much time you want outdoors and whether your family needs a simple park stop or an overnight base.
Kiwanis Park, at 806 Snake River Avenue, combines a playground with picnic shelters, restrooms, public art and trail access. It is a useful choice for mixed ages: children can play before the family walks a manageable section of the riverside route. Choose a turnaround before setting off and allow time to return to your vehicle.
Hells Gate State Park includes the Lewis & Clark Discovery Center. These listings can fit one outing, with indoor exhibits and a film providing a different pace from the park’s outdoor recreation. Check the visitor center’s hours separately from the longer day-use hours.
Boating notice, checked September 8, 2026: the state park announces dredging September 14–18, closing its marina entrance to all traffic during the work. Confirm access with the park at 208-799-5015 if launching or joining a boat trip is part of your plan. The notice concerns the marina entrance; it does not describe a closure of the entire park.
McKay’s Bend Recreation Site is about 18 miles east of Lewiston on Highway 12, beside the Clearwater River. It offers a day-use picnic area and developed camping, including full-hookup RV sites. Campsites are first-come, first-served; the reservable group pavilion is a separate arrangement.
Showers are for registered campers, and there is no RV dump station. Those distinctions matter when comparing a day stop with an overnight visit. Use the recreation-site directions at milepost 18.6, not the managing office’s Cottonwood mailing address.
