A valley day built around fish and water

Start with Mackay Fish Hatchery if your children enjoy seeing how things work. Idaho Fish and Game lists self-guided visits daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; arrange a guided group visit in advance. The hatchery is reached by taking Fish Hatchery Road west from US 93 north of Mackay, so allow time for the side trip.

For a picnic afterward, consider Joe T. Fallini Recreation Site at Mackay Reservoir. The BLM lists day-use shade shelters and vault toilets. A day visit and an overnight campground stay are different plans; open the recreation-site listing for details before packing camping equipment.

Choose a shorter outing if time is limited

The Big Lost River Access Trail begins outside Mackay and offers walking and wildlife watching. The local visitor guide describes a three-mile nonmotorized trail and asks visitors to respect adjoining private land. Choose a turnaround that suits your family rather than committing to the whole trail after a full day out.
