Mackay’s family outings include a riverside walk, a working fish hatchery and recreation at the reservoir north of town. Each has a separate access point, so pick a main activity before planning the rest of your day.
Match the stop to your family
- A walk with room to turn back: The Big Lost River Access Trail starts outside Mackay. The local visitor guide describes three miles of nonmotorized trail for walking, wildlife viewing and fishing access. Stay on the public trail beside private property.
- A look at Idaho’s fisheries: Mackay Fish Hatchery raises several kinds of trout and other fish for stocking. Self-guided visits are listed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, with a public restroom available. For a group tour, call 208-588-2219 ahead of time. Use the hatchery’s signed approach off US 93 and Fish Hatchery Road, rather than a downtown Mackay map pin.
- A reservoir picnic or camping trip: Joe T. Fallini Recreation Site has day-use picnic shelters, a boat launch and tent and RV camping. The BLM lists individual campsites as first come, first served; do not assume a campsite is reserved because you have planned a day at the water.
Keep the activities separate when planning
A hatchery visit is an educational stop; arrange any fishing at a permitted river or reservoir access instead. Check the current fishing rules and recreation-site information before bringing rods or a boat.
