Explore St. Maries

St. Maries offers a useful starting point for a short fishing stop, a local-history visit, or a longer forest trip. The town-based options and the campgrounds in the wider St. Joe region should not be treated as one compact itinerary.

A manageable fishing outing near town

Spicer Pond, also called Saint Maries Pond, is a small Family Fishing Water beside the St. Maries River. Idaho Fish and Game lists a dock and accessible toilet facilities. Its directions take visitors about 0.8 mile south after crossing the river from the east end of town, with the pond and parking on the right.

The pond can suit a shorter outing than a trip deep into the forest. Bring the fishing gear you need, check current rules, and keep the adjacent river separate from your pond-fishing plan. There is no campground at the pond.

Arrange history visits and camping separately

If your family prefers local history, Hughes House Museum requires advance planning: Visit Idaho lists tours by appointment. Contact the museum before making it the reason for your drive.

Camp 3 Campground is a substantially longer trip. Forest Service directions describe 35 miles east from St. Maries followed by 15 miles south on Marble Creek Road. The small, first-come campground has vault toilets but no developed drinking water. Pack water and check road and fire conditions before committing to an overnight stay. Its regional location should not be confused with a campground in town.
