Planning a family outing from Butte City? The three listings below cover different parts of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, outside town in the Arco area. They can help you plan one park visit; they are not three separate parks within Butte City.

Start with the visitor center and a short trail

The visitor center is the practical first stop for a map, museum exhibits, restrooms and current access information. Its hours and services change by season, so check before driving out.

North Crater Flow Trail offers a short introduction to the lava landscape. The National Park Service describes a 0.3-mile, wheelchair-accessible loop with a raised boardwalk. Stay on the designated route: the lava is fragile and parts of the boardwalk are elevated above the ground. This short loop is a useful choice when your family wants to see lava formations without committing to a longer hike.

Decide whether camping is part of the trip

Lava Flow Campground is near the visitor center and trails, with campsites set among lava. Water and flush toilets are seasonal, and vehicle access depends on weather and Loop Road opening. Bring a payment card for the campsite fee machine; wood fires are prohibited. Check current campground rules before packing cooking equipment.

For a day trip, use a designated picnic area rather than an unoccupied campsite. The park lists picnic space at the visitor center and other designated stops.
