Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge near Bonners Ferry is a place for watching wild birds and animals in wetlands, meadows, and forest. Bring binoculars and choose a short walk with time to stop and look; wildlife sightings depend on the season and are never guaranteed.
Road work and auto-tour access
Checked September 8, 2026: the refuge’s auto-tour route is closed to motor vehicles during road work. Walking and cycling access is from headquarters only, with the Deep Creek exit closed; construction vehicles also use the route. Check the refuge’s current access notice before leaving home.
Planning your visit
Public restrooms and a picnic area are near headquarters at 287 Westside Road. Refuge admission is free. Office availability depends on staffing, so a weekday visit does not guarantee an indoor stop.
Bring water, snacks, and weather protection. Observe animals from a distance, stay out of closed areas, and remember this is bear country. Swimming, camping, and overnight parking are prohibited. For current route information, call 208-267-3888.
