Myrtle Falls Trail near Bonners Ferry is a forest walk to a waterfall overlook beside the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge area. It can be paired with wildlife viewing, but the access arrangements need special attention during the 2026 road project.
Parking during construction
Checked September 8, 2026: the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says Riverside Road construction continues through October 30. The usual Myrtle Falls parking lot is closed. The trail remains accessible through the refuge’s picnic-area parking lot; headquarters and restrooms remain accessible as well.
Do not follow an older itinerary that assumes the usual roadside lot or a drive through the auto-tour route is available. Read the current refuge notice and follow the on-site detour signs.
Before you walk
The trail has uphill sections and uneven footing. Choose shoes with traction and keep children close near the overlook, especially when the ground is wet. A short trail is still an outdoor hike, so allow time for the return walk and changing weather.
