McCroskey State Park is a forest-and-scenery outing from Tensed. The listings below describe its scenic drive, trails and camping areas within one park outside town.
Skyline Drive is a gravel route a little over 17 miles long. It is narrow, with passing places, and is not plowed in winter. The park advises drivers of long or wide RVs and trailers to assess the road before committing to it.
From the Tensed area, the official directions describe access from US 95 through DeSmet. Another entrance farther south on US 95 leads directly onto Skyline Drive. Use the park’s access map and directions when selecting your approach.
Bring drinking water and a bag for your rubbish: water is seasonal and there is no garbage service. Vault toilets are available. Trails are shared by hikers, cyclists, horses and motorized users, so select an appropriate route and watch for other traffic.
For a first family visit, consider a scenic drive with a planned picnic stop. If camping, choose an established campground and check current conditions before leaving Tensed.
