Johnny Sack's Cabin at Big Springs

Johnny Sack’s Cabin is a handcrafted historic log bungalow beside Big Springs, the headwaters of the Henrys Fork of the Snake River. German-born cabinetmaker Johnny Sack leased the site from the Forest Service in 1929 and built the cabin from 1932 to 1935, creating its furniture, bark-covered decorative woodwork, and waterwheel by hand.

Good to Know

The Big Springs grounds and outdoor viewing areas can be enjoyed year-round. Cabin interior access is seasonal and volunteer-dependent; the published general schedule is 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from mid-June through Labor Day, but days may be limited. Admission is by suggested donation. Confirm interior hours before making a special trip. The cabin is about five miles east of Macks Inn and is reached by a short paved path from the Big Springs parking area.
