Minidoka National Wildlife Refuge surrounds much of Lake Walcott and the Snake River northeast of Rupert, offering families a large high-desert landscape for birding, wildlife watching, fishing, boating, hiking, and nature photography.

💡 Good to Know

• 🕒 The refuge is open year-round from dawn to dusk for approved activities.
• 🎟️ There is no refuge entrance fee, although Lake Walcott State Park has its own fees.
• 🚗 Vehicle access is limited in some areas, and unimproved roads may require high clearance or four-wheel drive during wet or snowy conditions.
• 🚤 Boat fishing on designated Lake Walcott waters is permitted April 1 through October 31; bank fishing is available year-round.
• ⛺ The refuge itself is day-use only. Camping is available within Lake Walcott State Park.
